South Indian Breakfast Combo: Perfect Side Dishes for Dhosai
South Indian Breakfast Combo: Perfect Side Dishes for Dhosai
The first thing you imagine whenever thinking of a proper South Indian breakfast is what? To us, it is mostly hot, crunchy off-tawa dhosai accompanied by chutney and hot sambar. Although the dhosai is the main dish of the dish, the side dishes give the entire meal its complete satisfaction.
My home on Sundays was the smell of dhosai being made in the kitchen as my mom rushed off to make at least three different chutneys and a huge bowl of sambar. The presence of that much variety ensured that even the simplest dosai tasted like a feast. I also have a list of side dishes that can accompany various types of dhosa, years of experience have given me the opportunity to come up with this list--and I am glad to share it with you!
Therefore, when you get tired of your regular breakfast coconut chutney, here are 10 best side dishes that will make your breakfast delicious and healthy, too.
1. Coconut Chutney
- The classic! It is creamy, cool and you need only 5 mins to prepare it.
- Ingredients: Roasted chana dal, salt, grated coconut, green chilli, ginger and mustard seeds and curry leaves are tied and blended in a grinder.
- My Tip: You can add a small piece of garlic to enhance its flavour that would come like magic.
2. Sambar
- Sambar is the one that cannot be omitted in any combination of a South Indian breakfast. particularly when it is the thinner, less spiced tiffin sambar that uses small onions.
- Personal Memory: My granny used to ladle a glass of steaming sambar-on the dhosai and heavenly!
4. Kara Chutney
- This spicy red chutney will be a must have to anyone who loves a bit of spice in the morning.
- Ingredients: Onion, red chillies, garlic and tamarind.
- My Tip: To have a proper flavour, use Guntur chillies; however reduce heat to your comfort level.
5. Peanut Chutney
- Rich, protein filled and slightly nutty, peanut chutney is ideal when you are not in the mood of coconut.
- Materials- Roasted peanuts, garlic, green chilli, tamarind.
6. Mint-Coriander
- This is a refreshing as well as cooling green chutney which is best served on a hot summer morning.
- Serving Hint: Ten minutes in a refrigerator will give it a fresher taste on serving.
7. Onion-Tomato Gotsu
- It is a delicious side dish which is like gravy, that gives variety to your dosa diet and can be served instead of sambar.
- Recipe: Tomato, onion, tamarind and sambar powder.
- Texture: A little bit liquid and sour-tasting- an ideal dipping sauce of dosas.
- Most Suitable with: Set dosa, pesarattu and bajra dosa.
8. Garlic Chutney
- Spicy chutney with high flavour and stimulating taste buds as well as immunity.
9. Kurma
- Kurma is rather a main than a side dish, creamy and vegetable full. It goes well with thick dosas though it is normally served with chapati or idiyappam.
- Components: Mixed vegetables, coconut, poppy seeds, green chilli and mild spices.
- Best In: Perfect dosa; wheat dosa.
- Meal Tip: Put a short bowl of kurma into your breakfast and you will get a filling and balanced meal.
10. Dosa Podi
- Serving Style: One could mix with oil or sprinkle on dhosai.
Homely Touch: I
still receive a bottle of her homemade podi in each month by my mother. There is nothing like that flavour!
Bonus:
- The combo of Coconut and Tomato chutney is creamy and tangy
- Sambar+ Onion chutney = spicy and comforting
- Podi + Peanut chutney = heaven in a nut shell
- There is also no need to prepare three different dishes all the time: one good chutney and some podi will make even a plain dhosai special!
Concl Where I Started From:
- A dhosai requires a good company. And at the South Indian households, the side dishes are vital as the dhosai itself. Be it spicy blue-coloured gravy, creamy sauce or light and tangy chutneys you will find more options on this list.
- Experiment with combinations during the course of the week- you will never be tired of dhosai. Believe me, I have been experimenting years and every new combination has a joy to itself.
